Are Angels Mortal or Immortal? Part 1
“Jesus answered and said to them, “The sons of this age marry and are given in marriage. But those who are counted worthy to attain that age, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage; nor can they die anymore, for they are equal to the angels and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.” Luke 20:34-36
This text has been used by many to claim that not only are angels Immortal, but likewise so shall all believers be in the resurrection, but is this true?
There are two reasons for this false assumption, the first is the failure to consider the whole context of what was being discussed by our Lord, and the second is the failure to take into consideration the whole counsel of the word of God, what the scriptures as a whole teach us of this matter. If these both had been properly followed this erroneous view would never have found any substance nor be considered as sound doctrine. “The Lord is his own interpreter and he will make it plane.”
But let us for the moment say that it was true, especially the part about the angels being Immortal, how shall we reason the following:
We read in the scriptures of how our Lord faithfully bowing to the Father’s will, “…took upon himself the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name” Phil 2:7-10
Being found faithful unto death the Father highly exalted His son, our Lord Jesus Christ to a plane of existence far above all the principalities and powers (1 Pet 3:22), to the very plane inhabited by our Father Himself, the Divine plane of existence, “Immortality”
This Scripture implies that Jesus’ PRESENT GLORY is greater than that which he possessed before becoming a man, otherwise it would not have been an EXAULTATION, which proves that it is a higher plane than that which He occupied BEFORE he endured the cross, becoming obedient unto death.
Why? Because the definition of IMMORTAL is, a state or condition not liable to death. Not merely a condition of freedom from death, but a condition in which DEATH IS AN IMPOSSIBILITY.
Thus, confirming that our Lord prior to his EXAULTATION to the Divine plane of existence had to be “Mortal”. The definition of MORTAL is, a state or condition of being liable to death. NOT a condition of death, but a condition in which death is a possibility.
This seems to be in direct contradiction to those who claim that angels are immortal, for several questions come to mind:
Do not the scriptures say that “he took not the nature of angels; but nature of man”, thus implying that he took two steps down to become a man, who is but a little lower than an angel?
If this were true than at one time, he must have been in a position much higher than that of angels, so how then is it that they, angels (as is assumed) are immortal, and yet by evidence of his death he was not?
The scriptures also state in Col 1:16,17 “For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.”
Did the mortal create the immortal?
